How to become Sub Inspector of Police in Tamilnadu is not a frequent question which I have to answer for our readers. But I feel this would help some of the college goers who have no one to guide them.
Why be a Police Officer?
After watching movies like Khaka Khaka, Vettaiyadu Vilayadu and Saamy many of us wanted to become a police officer. Some would even take steps to become police and will start to explore how to become one. But if only such movies make you aspire to become sub-inspector, I would insist you to watch Visaranai too. Because Visaranai is the true side of the Indian Police.
We are not a new generation who inspire to become sub-inspector. Our previous generation too got inspired to become a police officer. I have spoken to some IPS officers some of them have said that they got inspired to become a police officer by reading novels like the Rajesh Kumar’s Novels. After joining as a police they have regret for that. I’m Not trying to demotivate you. If you really want to be a police you can. But I think it is my duty to give u a caution.
Ways of Recruitment:
There are many departments in TamilNadu police with many designations. But the recruitment will be taken only for several posts.
The lowest of all is Police Constable. TNUSRB will conduct recruitment for it. TNUSRB will also recruit some other designations like Jailer, Traffic police, and Fireman. Here I’m mentioning about Traffic police, Jailer and Fireman because you will be writing one exam and will be appearing for one physical test. On basis of the score obtained on that exam, our posting will be decided. There will be ranking and the top rankers only will be getting police constable. Even if you get police constable position there are two categories. AR and Battalion. The difference between both of these posts is minor. If you get AR you will be allotted a police station and so you will be maintaining Law and Order. If you get battalion you have to be in an allotted battalion with other police officers and no police station will be given and will be asked to give protection anywhere anytime.

The highest of all is IPS. For that, you should be appearing for UPSC exam. Next comes the DSP entry through TNPSC recruitment which will be higher than SI and lower than IPS through UPSC. But with promotions in 10 years he too could become an IPS.
So between this higher post and the lower post lies the middle one. It is Sub Inspector of Police.
Police hierarchy:
Understanding the Tamilnadu Police hierarchy is one of a difficult job. There are a lot of designations so it is complicated to explain. I have asked to several police officers and have formulated a hierarchy of Tamil Nadu Police.
DGP>ADGP>IG>DIG>SP>ASP>DSP>Inspector>SI>Head constabe>constable.
Director General of Police > Additional Director general of police> Inssector General of police> Deputy Inspector General of police>Superintend of Police> Assistant superintend of police> deputy superintend of police> Inspector> Sub Inspector.
Procedure to become Sub Inspector:
Tamilnadu Uniform Service Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) conducts exam for the recruitment of Sub Inspector of Police. This exam won’t be conducted every year. When there are lot of vacancies Tamilnadu government will announce for the recruitment. Happens once for 5 years. The Person have to write a test. The test will be in objective form. After clearing the written test, the person will be called for an interview. Finally physical test will be there and then the medical test will be conducted. As a result, you will be rewarded with a Sub Inspector of Police post. Consequently, One-year training will be provided. You have to be in camp during the training period. Daily parade will be conducted. Some exams will also be conducted. Those exams decide your promotions.
